INTRO: The vietnam war was not one of the worst wars in history, but it was the first that really affected not just people in Vietnam but also here in the U.S.. Photos started showing on the news of people in the warzone. Photos of people being blown up, protesters who have lit themselves on fire. Seeing all of these horrible images started riots. Students in colleges were protesting against the war, they wanted the war to end. GOALS & ACTIONS: The goals of the protesters was to get U.S. to back off from the war between north vietnam and south vietnam. They wanted the bombing of north vietnam to stop, but because of that police were hitting protesters. Which made them have one more goal, for police to stop this type of actions toward people who were acting with non-violence. To protest and take action for the goals they would stand around their school carrying signs and yelling chants. Some people even burned their draft cards so if their number was called they wouldn't go. ALLIES & OPPONENTS: Main allies of the protest group were college students and others from the younger generation. But the people who opposed the protests and were with the war were their parents and grandparents, also the authority like police, military, and some politicians. LEADERS: One of the protest leaders was Bertrand Russell he led against using the nuclear chemical vietnam in 1960.
INSPIRATIONAL WORDS: Lots of people wrote songs and poems about the war, some famous singers even wrote songs, like beatles member John Lennon. He wrote the song give peace a chance. "Ev'rybody's talking about Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism This-ism, that-ism Isn't it the most All we are saying is give peace a chance All we are saying is give peace a chance".
Bob Dylan wrote the song Blowin' in the wind. "How many roads must a man walk down before you can him a man? How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand? Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly before they are forever banned? The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind. The answer is blowin' in the wind." In my opinion the reason the words were so powerfull was mainly because it told about how these people were affected by the war. Aswell as the words show the extent of how far the war went. CONEXION AL PRESENTE: People thought that the Vietnam war was very similar to our current war in Iraq. People think that when George W. Bush was president that he was making very similar mistakes of those of president Johnson and Nixon. The difference between Vietnam's protest and today's protest is how they handled it. Before people were going crazy with the protests taking it out on the Vets, calling them "baby killers". But now they've tooken a more sofisticated approach by saying they don't agree with the idea of the war, but they supporting their troops.
COMMON ELEMENTS & ART WORK: The common elements of the Iraq war and Vietnam war is that the U.S. made themselves part of the war when they really didn't need to be part of if. Sending many lives over seas. Memorial sculpture was created by Maya Lin. Who had one a national medal of arts. highland park, ny.
